  WHY HOLIDAYS ARE SO IMPORTANT?

I just got back to work following a 3-week holiday back in Wollongong, Australia my hometown. Prior to leaving for my year-end holidays, I was feeling fatigued, tired and very much in need of a break; now after 3 weeks and back to the plant am feeling invigorated, excited and energized at the year ahead, that's what a good vacation does to you.

In MIR VALVE, I do not allow our employees to accrue holidays simply, because I firmly believe a company entitles you to a annual 3 or 4 weeks holiday period, because you absolutely need it. Stress, fatigue, pressures build up over time at work and you need time away to unwind, relax, enjoy family time and re-energize.

I check to ensure that all our employees take their due holidays, once they are back they all agree how good it felt to be away and how not so good it feels to be back to work (jokingly straight after being back to work).

Holidays during the year are very important - ensure you plan and take them.

10 YEARS AGO AN IDEA WAS BORN

10 years ago, back on a Sunday morning of 15th of January 2006, Stasi Prandalos woke up with an idea: why don't I establish a valve manufacturer here in Kuala Lumpur? Bringing in Italian technology, manufacturing to European standards and put the HQ and plant in Malaysia. He had already been living in Malaysia for 15 years working in the oil and gas sector managing the Asia Pacific region and had seen Malaysia turn into a regional hub.

His focus was to manage the customers in Asia-Pacific, ensuring a higher level of service, commitment and support that the European manufacturers could not match. His reason not to be in Italy was simply because there were 54 existing ball and gate valve manufacturers, to be no. 55 offered no added value, no benefit or excitement to the market or to our customers and so he located the company in Kuala Lumpur.

From this point onwards, he worked evenings and weekends, compiling the business plan which he completed in June 2007. The task then was to hit road and pitch to investors to raise the seed capital, which he successfully achieved and started to build the company from ground zero from the 1st of August 2007. The rest is history.
